Flash Fiction! The Key

the key

A fit and healthy man, in his mid-40s, is found dead in his bed.

His front door is locked, his windows are locked. There is only one way up to his 12th floor penthouse apartment, CCTV shows no-one, coming or going.

Until the maid turns up and finds him.

There is no sign of a break-in, no sign of a struggle.

The only indication of the murder, is the long thin blade, pushed through his back, between his ribs, piercing his heart.

‘Let the fools work this one out’ the young officer thought to himself, watching his puzzled superiors.

‘Pathetic’ he thought, being careful not to scrunch his face in disgust as he slyly pockets the key.
